Why most duct cleaning is sold badly

The EPA does not recommend routine duct cleaning. Its position is that cleaning has no demonstrated health benefit on its own, and that it is worth doing where there is visible mold, evidence of vermin, or enough debris that it is being blown into the rooms. Most of this trade does not mention that.

The second problem is the coupon. A price per vent quoted over the phone, before anyone has seen the system, is not a quote for cleaning the system — it is a price for turning up. Proper source removal means sealing the ducts, putting them under negative pressure with a HEPA-filtered vacuum, and agitating the interior surfaces, and it takes hours rather than forty minutes.

The third is that the ducts are frequently not the problem. A smell that appears in the first few seconds of a cycle is usually the evaporator coil or the blower wheel; a room that will not get comfortable is usually a leak or a disconnected run. Both are cheaper to fix than a full clean and neither is fixed by one.

So the useful first step is someone looking inside the system and telling you which of those it is — including, quite often, none of them.

Massachusetts specifically

Massachusetts has an unusual amount of housing with no ductwork — steam and hot-water baseboard are everywhere — so forced air is often a later retrofit squeezed into a building that was not designed for it. Retrofit duct runs are tighter, longer and harder to reach than purpose-built ones.

Where a triple-decker has been converted, the duct chase usually passes through all three units, which is why a smell or a noise complaint in one apartment is rarely only that apartment's problem.
